It’s been a rough couple of weeks for this blogger!
Two weeks ago, I decided to update my blogging software. Let me just say that blogging software updates should come with warning labels for people like me. The software update broke my blog. After the upgrade, I logged on to My Grandma Knows and all of my posts from the past six months were missing. Gone. Just like that! Poof!
I wanted to cry, but I didn’t. Thank the Lord, I had backed up my blog files before installing the upgrade. In fact, I was feeling a little smug when a technical support person from my hosting company praised me for that move and told me that I was my own best friend for actually doing a back-up. Just a minor glitch in my blogging hobby, I thought, after he walked me through the process of getting my files back on my blog. (That’s called importing for those of you who are not as tech-savvy as I am.)
That euphoria didn’t last long because although I had all of my posts back, most of my photographs were missing. After five or six more calls and hours on the phone with tech support specialists named Tim, Nick, Matt, and Andy, nothing had been resolved. What began as a little glitch in the system ended with some smart aleck techno geek named Travis “doing me a favor” by helping me with my problem by speaking to me very slowly in that condescending tone reserved for small children and computer idiots like myself.
“Ma’am, do you see the word ‘theme’ … t-h-e-m-e? Can you put your cursor on the word ‘theme’, please? We want the word ‘theme’ to turn green now.”
“Why, thank you, Travis. I do believe I learned to spell the word ‘theme’ before you learned to wipe your own …. nose.”
Just about the time I was ready to walk away from anything having to do with ini.files, html, FTP managers and the like, I received an offer for some help from an online friend who has some experience with my blogging software. She helped me to sort out all of the problems with my blog and restored everything that was able to be restored. I’m happy to be back in the blogosphere, and I’m looking forward to posting again.
Things look a little different here at My Grandma Knows. I like the new look, though I do miss that coffee cup in the header. Many of my photographs have to be uploaded again and manually replaced, and I’m planning to repair them now that I’m up and running again.
After having to depend on someone else to fix these problems for me, I’ve been thinking about taking a few courses on computer technology and becoming my own computer expert …… or maybe I’ll just learn how to rebuild airplane engines or split atoms. It’s all the same to me!
So, tell me, how do you like the new look here at My Grandma Knows?
